Hey all how's it going? So the other day I raced my buddy in a 95 Firehawk on a closed road for racing purposes... and he got me, he missed third and I started pulling on him, but he recovered quickly and came back for the win. I need more power, but I'm strapped for cash. I'm thinking heads would give me the edge i need, but I was looking into the option of porting mine. Would I see as significant of a gain by porting my stock heads? Or saving up for those FRPPs? I'm trying to stay all motor otherwise I'd go with a nitrous kit. I don't know, I'm still new to this and any insight would help. Thanks :)

Have you ever ported a 3-valve head? Or any heads for that matter? It's not like you can just take a dremel and start removing material.

Thats exactly what I was going to do Im glad you talked me out of it. I just know itd be cheaper to get my heads ported then buy new, but I wasnt sure about the power difference. but Im currently running FRPP cams, cai, and catback, I just need more go juice.

What cams are you running, hot rods? If so I would swap those out first. Then exhaust (headers). Indon't know how much can be gained from porting your heads until you have all the other supporting elements in place. Sure there are probably some gains, but you won't see the real benefits unless you have everything in place.

Do you think theres a possibility Im losing power over the hot rod cams? I mean it feels like its pulling the same or more, but I have no dyno numbers to support my claim.. but i know i didnt over cam it. and Im timid to go on headers, because I know about the gains, but the sound might be to much for my neighbors. I dont want them telling me I cant park my car here because its too loud. Ive seen it happen..

And smooth out the flow of air through the manifold. Intake velocity is key to making horsepower. There are a lot of obstructions and corners in a set of stock heads, this makes for a slower more turbulent flow.

It is my opinion that you could do better than the hot rods. They will give you power gains over stock but leave some power on the table because they are designed to run rough at low RPM's. Same duration with more LSA will net you better gains.

Not trying to thread jack here but what exactly Is head porting? I have a basic idea but I'm not sure... sorry OP

 ^ youtube it lol removing material from the head to get higher cfm's. resulting in more power. its pretty much the same concept at opening up your intake and exhaust. better flow.

So couldn't you just bring it to a machine shop and have them do it?

I nevef even thought about this, thanks for the idea

Check out steve shmidt racing on google. Seems pretty legit and not very expensive at all

I had an old school guy do my porting.. even ported the block to eliminate weak spots.. then I found out the better the port job the harder it is to make boost. it is a pretty good trade tho

Because you're already cammed, long tubes would give you the gains they normally would and then some. Cams and long tubes love each other. You can leave the catback stock even with long tubes if you're worried about volume. I did it all winter. Still sounded great and was not by any means alarmingly loud.

Long tubes would be my next mod if I were you. I netted 30rwhp and 20rwtq from p&p heads and they actually changed my curve, they were my last power mod. If you buy heads you will have to buy coil packs also, your an 05, add a few hundred more $.My heads came from Coupe Performance coupeperformance.com look him up, he will do your heads if you send them to him.I am very pleased w/my heads and I am stingy w/compliments

machanical noob here, just wondering, what does porting headers mean?

Well I'm going to look into headers, and finding someone to port my heads, compare the prices and well see what happens. I appreciate it guys I'll post back to the thread with the next mod whenever I get the funds and time to get it done :)
