Rattle/knock from intake

On my 01 Bullitt I've developed and engine knock/tick. To best describe the noise, it sounds like a lifter tapping on a internal cam engine. The noise cant be heard at idle, basically just under slight acceleration or holding a steady speed down the road. If you turn off the car for just a minute, and turn it back on.....the noise isn't there. but after letting it run for a good minute the noise comes back.

At first I thought it may have been a lash adjuster causing it, I pulled the pass. side valve cover off and checked everything, nothing loose or worn..... I opened the oil cap on left side valve cover but it doesn't sound like its coming from there. The noise seems to be coming from the intake manifold itself. Today I pulled off the intake tube and let it run in the driveway, revving it I couldn't hear the noise but as soon as you put your hand over the butterflies the noise comes back! Any ideas?!?!?!?!

Well I thought it was the lifters. So I replaced them, didnt seem to help. So then my throwout bearing started squeaking so I thought I may have also had a broken spring in my clutch, the noise is really hard to pin point and you can hear it really good under the bellhousing. So I drove on it for like 5 months with this little ticking noise. Then one day I went running around with a a guy and his Viper. By the end of the night the noise got louder, and if I kept it in low rpms it would all but disappear. So I figured my clutch was doomed and got home and ordered a new one.
Well, this weekend I left work and it went from making the loud noise, to making a very loud noise instantly. I thought my clutch had grenaded in my bellhosuing. Towed it to a buddies house, removed the trans and nothing on the clutch looked broken. The pads we due for replacement but nothing looked out of place. So put it all back together with my new clutch. Noise is STILL there. So I guess I'll be pulling the valve covers again to make sure a rocker didnt pop off, and if not it looks like I'll be pulling the pan and checking for a wrist pin or other issue.

this is probably not it but is it possibly it could be a exhaust leak? Like by headers or somewhere else?

^^^^^^ Take a flash light and check around where the manifolds meet the heads, see if you can see some black powered residue around anything, same with the manifold to mid pipe.

I havent checked the spark plugs again yet, but when it first started making noise I went ahead and replaced the plugs...this was 5 months ago. Same thing with the exhaust manifolds, havent seen anything out of place, but I havent looked again since it started making the real loud noise, the car is sitting on a car lift 70 miles away at a friends. It just seems weird that the car runs fine, doesnt miss, doesnt smoke, nothing. Ill try to keep you all updated if I dont go jump off a bridge :) jk

The past week Ive had to shift real early to keep it in low rpms so the noise is distant. But friday I left work, turned the corner, gave it throttle and like snapping your finger it went from bad to worse. hmmmmmm.....

thats in the valve train, doesnt have the deep thud of a lower end noise, plus it doesnt have a stead/constant thud of a rod/main bearing problem

Id pull the valve covers and look at the followers and lash adjusters. Prob have a few that have collapsed on your. I dont remember, have you or havent you replaced the lash adjusters? They are prone to collapsing. If you need new ones, get ones from Ford or contact Nick with modular head shop, hes found a supplier that makes quality lash adjusters

those are hit or miss, ive picked up a few that failed new in box, could collapse them with my fingers at the parts counter

I pulled the right side valve cover (where most of the noise seems to be coming from) and ran the engine. Everything top-side of head looks good. I pulled the #4 plug to see if the noise quieted down, and it didnt. But when I removed the #3 plug, it got really loud then went away for 10 seconds, then get really loud again. I think i found the cylinder. Is there any other way of looking for my problem without pulling the engine.

Name's Mike and I think that's probably what it is I got a similar noise coming from the manifold I just put in a aluminum overflow tank didn't really get a chance to burp it car didn't overheat but it caused a lot of pressure I think it cracked the radiator radiator is crack and that noise comes from under or inside the manifold but I did check and I think they said something that over time Heat can cause a baffle inside manifold to come loose and I did just recently put aftermarket supposedly great spark plugs knowing I should have gone with Motorcraft and that's way things go change one part and something else brakes.GDTL
