I'm thinking about getting the Viper Security system for my stang, but my question is how can I get the remote start part installed on my manual? I heard that places won't install it on manual vehs because of issues if the car is left in gear....I always park with the car in neutral and the emergency break up.
Appreciate it Guys!

i highly suggest against it. had a good friend put one on and he said it was totally fail safe and that he always left his car in neutral. yeah. till one day two weeks later he did not and his girlfriend grabbed the wrong pair of keys and hit the remote start and it went through the garage door smashing into her car...

A local shop put one on my car and they installed a pull switch under the dash so i can disengauge the clutch switch if i plan on using it or leave it engauged so the remote start will not work.

I vote this man has the best avatar on this site.

Wait, what's this thread about?

Oh that's right. I looked into it at one point and figured it wouldn't be worth it just in case those few times I do leave it in 1st or reverse (when I'm on a hill,) and I don't wanna forget. As for the safety systems that won't start while it's in gear, well, I never looked into that. Thanks!

I installed one on my truck. It had a neutral safety switch, and just like what happened to AZ's buddy it happened to me. Except I was lucky that my truck only went into the ditch before stalling out.

That and parking brakes are not always 100% effective at preventing a car from moving... thats kinda why you leave the car in gear when you park, so the friction in the trans prevents the car from rolling. I consider Parking Brakes on cars a lot like Safeties on Firearms... never trust em, but always use em and take extra precautions to prevent the car from rolling.

yehh i wouldn't put a remote start on my manual...unless there's a way to make it not start if your car is in gear...

there is a reason it comes factory so that you have to have the clutch depressed to start it

yeah dont do it! i had one on my last car and it was cool and all, but that one time.........just one time i thought i left it in neutral and left it in 1st gear.........WHAM!!! right into a fence. no major damge (pride mostly) but it sucked and i would advise against it.

I think in a good amount of states...aside from liability issues, a lot of places won't do it because it's illegal on manuals.

I believe that's what I was told when asking about it around here a few years back.

+1 To everyone else who suggested against putting a remote start in manual.. Unless you're the ONLYYYY person who drives your car, and even then, it's still not a good idea. I have a friend who swore something like that would never happen to him, one day here at work he was getting ready to leave and he hit his remote start to warm the car up before going outside..

When he went outside, he found his car in the middle of the parking lot, and like 20 feet away, another car's side door was smashed in.. lol

DEI (Viper) actually makes a lockout switch that you can interface directly into the unit or you can do what Joe (TrickTuners) said and throw a relay in there.
Ive dealt with these systems for awhile now and I am avidly against it.
I installed one into by buddies 05 GT that he always parked in the garage and one day he accidentally sat on the keys, engaged the remote start, and ran his car through the wall into his living room. Not the whole car just the front end. The Ebrake was on.

also, i might add, this system when you get out of your car makes you do a certain sequence before you get out of your car if you want to remote start it later. It makes you cycle the clutch, ebrake, and throw the car into neutral which sends a signal to the unit and recognizes that the sequence for remote start has been initiated for a later use.

I find too many people calling themselves "Professionals" installing these, are complete morons! I've removed more remote starters than I've installed because they have caused no start conditions. I know it's hard to go outside and start the car manually. That's why you send your wife.

I hope this is not intended to be towards me.

If it was, I was just simply stating that I have worked on many in my past. Not once during my time doing it did I ever have a problem with them coming back saying that they were messing up cause of the installation. Not once. I do agree that there are some installers out there that "claim" to know what they are doing when they actually dont. But thats everywhere you go honestly.

During my time I took pride in my work and it is very hard to come by someone that does that. I've even walked fellow members through a whole install and never once have they said that they have had a problem. If someone in my area needs help I dont charge them for anything simple or small, I will help them out seeing that I know more about it and I make sure that they and anyone else's car is perfect before they leave and understand how it works. I dont just install it then tell them to be on their ways nor do I ask anything in return, I guess call me a nice guy or what not but thats just me.

I no longer do this as an occupation but seeing that I did do this for a living at one point in my life I cant just sit idly by while you say that people calling themselves "Professionals" are complete morons (in this certain occupation). I would never tell you that you are a complete moron at what you do or did. /rant

If this was not intended towards me then :drink

It wasn't directed at you wraitherlx. Not at all :no. I tip my hat to you for taking pride in what your work and the finished product. It's a trait that is disappearing. I was just stating my experience in general. If it is done properly, then they work great. But I do find there are too many that think if they can install a car stereo then heck, they can install a remote starter.

:drink

No problem bro:drink you are correct though that it people who take pride in their jobs is a disappearing trait. That is another reason why I left is because alot of the people that were working underneath of me didnt have the pride in it, good guys, but just took the fun aspect out it. And you are right, alot of people think that if they can install a radio that a remote start wont be soo hard:no

But anyhow.... :drink :D

I know exactly what he's talking about ... I had a 'great' local shop that everyone had good luck with and even myself install a Viper Alarm & Remote Start System in a 2004 F150 and they botched it so bad it wasn't funny. The truck ended up going back to them about 5 times before I let someone else fix it. Sent them the bill but they never sent me a check? :( LOL

#28 ·
sorry to hear that bro... something should have been done about it. In any case if you ever go back to another audio shop ask whom the person is that gets alot of customers coming in and asking for him and praising him. That is the person that you wont to work on your car:yes

Yer.

Close friend of mine is a car audio guy, and a licensed remote starter installer. He's one of those guys who is just magic with electronics.

I've helped him put a few of these in, you know, just taking interior **** apart, etc, not doing any wiring.... and watched him go at it. It's not a small process. They can be very complicated and finicky to set up.
