Rounded top starter bolt help?

Sometime ago I started trying to drop the transmission/midpipe and I've run into some issues.

1. The top asshole bolt to the starter has progressively started to round off. The five or six times I've gotten the socket to sit perfectly on the bolt, I've pushed and pulled with a ridiculous amount of force and the thing hasn't budged. I've used pb blaster a few times but that hasn't helped much. I superglued the socket on and it stayed on perfectly allowing me to get a good workout in but the bolt still refused to budge. This is a 1/2" 6 point right hand thread bolt, like the other two, right?

2. I can't remove the midpipe for more clearance to mess with the starter because the starter prevents me from getting a wrench on the only bolt holding the midpipe on. If I use a deep well socket then there's no room to attach a socket wrench. If I use a standard socket then the socket wrench/extension slips off.

Any ideas would be appreciated. The only possible solution I've found while searching is dropping the trans+motor which i don't have the tools for, or breaking the starter mounting ear off which sounds absurd.

Why kind of midpipe, I know it's a pain to get a wrench up there on the passenger side but I did it. Need a swivel socket, I think I used a two 6" extensions and the swivel.

Are you sure you are using the right socket?

I'm pretty sure those bolts are metric and if its a 12mm head then that's how it got rounded off, a 1/2" socket is just a little bigger than a 12mm socket.

Double check on the bolt size but if it is 12mm then get a 6 wall 12mm socket and hopefully it won't slip.

I'm able to get a pretty straight shot to that top bolt with a long extension (ie 18 or 24 inches) and just one universal joint, coming in from the front but I can't remember exactly where.

99% sure it is. There's no wiggle room on When I put the 1/2 socket on the head of the other two bolts. I will try and see if a 12mm fits the top better.

Different motormount designs? Or am I crazy? I couldn't ever get the socket to sit well with the bolt head except with the superglue.

Definitely a 1/2". And I've been using a 6 point. I picked up a craftsmen bolt extractor socket so I'll be trying that.

wtf are the torque specs on these?

Your extensions may be keeping the socket from being all the way on there, that's what happened to me at first thought I had stripped it.

Reach up there with just the socket and put it on there then put on the extensions and try.

The bolts are a 13mm head, and the standard equivilent is a 1/2" . It should be pretty easy to get to it with a universal joint or wobble socket with an extension from the front. It will give you lots more room to break it loose

"wtf are the torque specs on these?"

The torque specs are pretty low, 17 ft-lbs.

The bolts screw into a pretty thin aluminum flange so that's why the torque spec is low and you have to be careful not to over tighten them or they will strip.

Since they aren't supposed to be very tight its surprising that you are having problems with this one bolt. It may have been overtorqued or sometimes a steel bolt in aluminum can get locked up from corrosion.

Unfortunately when this aluminum to steel corrosion does occur it can lock a bolt pretty firmly.

If you have any PB Blaster, liquid wrench or Kroil squirt some on the bolt end from the starter side.

Be careful when re-installing the bolts, 17 ft-lbs isn't much of a pull on a wrench.

I love you so much. You were right about the socket just falling off the head of the bolt. Got another swivel joint and I finally got this sick sonofabitch out after ~4 hours. I wouldn't be surprised if it was overtorqued by a certain shop a couple years ago since they overtorqued a **** ton of other things including my oil filter.

THANK YOU!!! Seriously, I haven't been this excited since I put my phb/lcas on.
