I was really pumped when I got home to see a box from brenspeed with my tuner , plugged it in followed steps and I get error codes no matter what I do with the key switch .

error code 1019 unlock ecm failed

1018 read strategy failed

and 1017 forgot what that was ,

but either way this is really bothering me , if anyone has any more info on my problem , please share , thanks

Dis you first install it on your computer and run the program?

Is it used?

What kind of tuner is it?

If it's an SCT tuner, their customer service is amazing. They will either talk you through how to fix it or remote-log in to your computer and set everything up for you.

Oh ****..it's kinda in the title lol

Need a few more details from OP to help him.. I'm a grizzled vet when it comes to dealing with tuner problems and thinking he unknowingly had a tune already on his car or got the computer code wrong (under the hood)

it is a widespread issue caused by a variety of things. some have had to have their PCM reflashed by ford while others were successfull in reseting the PCM by pulling the battery connection for a bit and hitting the brake then hooking back up.

sometimes it is a security issue and sometimes just as silly as having the key in ACC instead of ON.

Best bet is to call brenspeed and SCT and see what they can do for you.

What step do you get to when the error messages come up? Is it right when you plug it in or in the middle of downloading the stock tune or other?

Make double sure you have the key in the correct position during the steps -- all the way off or all the way on (right before the click that starts the car).

Also, make sure ur using the correct sub-menu.. On mine, there's a "custom tune" option and "strategy tune" option.

"On position" is ALL dash lights on. Very important. The tuner will tell you when to turn the car all the way off n all the way on. You should NEVER have to start the car throughout this whole process.

During the tuning process, it should only ask you to either have the key position all the way off or all the way on. Again, never turn it enough to start the car.

If you have to, go out there and feel how many clicks the key moves before it turns the engine over.

Be careful when hooking it up the the computer. Even though I followed the direction to a T, the update on mine "failed" for some reason and "bricked" my X3. A quick call to SCT and they were able to fix the issue remotely via PC. The bigger issue was that ALL of my tune files including stock were erased after they reset my device. Luckily I set my car back to stock right before I tried updating the tuner. I would call your Tuner and SCT before doing anything on your own. Waiting in order to get your tuner problems solved so you don't mess up your PCM or worse, will be well worth the wait.

This same thing happend to me.. had sct remote update the tuner but lost my stock tune file so I had to go to ford for reflash.. $250 and a week later ford says come get the car and that theyre locked out of pcm for some reason..still havnt figured it all out.. Scares me of the tuner..

I bought mine used and it had the same problem when i loaded custom tune files to it. Couldn't get it to do anything. SCT replaced it for me for $65.

ever since I've had to have ford reflash my car for the second time back to stock by Ford I threw my tuner in the garbage and wrote to Sct how dissapointed I was in their device. After the first time you think they would have sent me a whole new programmer so it did'nt happen again. What do you know, happens again. Tired of having my car not running and having it towed 40 miles to closest ford dealer.

yes they asked all that info , its current. last resort is to send them my ecu and tuner and let them do it , they say its a communication problem between the ob2 port and my computer, but I checked to see if anything aftermarket was installed anywhere .....nothing. I am getting 18v from the x3 on pin 13 also , and it reads all my car info . soooo

This is the same thing they told me before I paid to have it shipped out for repairs. Then got it back still did'nt work right called up tech. Told me I had to ship it back out (this time they paid for shipping) got it back since then programmer has never been the same. Threw it in the trash.

Have you tried pulling the battery leads and reseting the ecu? On another car i was having issue communicating to the obd2 port but after pulling the battery it worked.

update so far. still stuck at the same place , my next step is to take it to the dealership and see if the ecu has been flashed or anything before . does anybody have an idea how much it will cost to have it flashed back to stock at ford? im asking because if its better off to find a wrecked ecu and use it .

Don't take your car to a Ford dealership if you don't know that they can fix the problem, or if there is no significant reason to suspect that something is wrong with your car. You may just end up creating more problems.

Listen to the people who are telling you to work this out with brenspeed/SCT. Personally, I would call brenspeed and let them know whats going on and see if they would exchange your SCT tuner for another one. So what if you have to wait, better to wait and be sure than to be over zealous and cause irreversible damage to your PCM.

If I had to guess, since you can read information from the PCM, the issue may be in writing the tune to the flash memory.
