Surging and poor Throttle Response after mod

I'm looking for suggestions on what might be causing a problem I'm seeing after I recently installed a BBK Cold Air intake and Throttle body on my 2001 V6. I installed these parts along with a new set of NGK iridium plugs and new plug wires.

Now, after putting it all together I am getting a terrible pause/surge when accelerating under load (up hills or trying to pass someone), and the throttle response just stinks. I am seeing a good half second or more delay in any acceleration when I kick it at all.

I'm thinking the Mass Air sensor is the problem, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas on what this might be? :wtf

if your maf was bad you would be throwing a code by now.

I personally think that you might have missed something when installing it or something came loose.

it happened to me when I had my v6.

car was sputtering hard out of no-where and eventually died.
I couldn't get it to start back up...

once I popped the hood I saw that the intake popped off at the elbow a little bit after the maf so it threw a false cel.
i put it back together and reset the battery and the car ran fine.

just wondering, what exhaust setup do you have? Is it still stock? Your pulling alot of air in now compared to before. Someone here once told me that the "speed" of the air coming in is just as important as volume. To increase both is ideal. Maybe dual exhausts will help balance things out. IDK...

I know that I lost power when I put in my first mod (exhaust). Then I put in a better intake and it made everything great. Inhale well, exhale better and you'll be safe.

just because he installed a CAI doesnt make his exhaust too small. basically with the aftermarket CAI's they just move where the air is being brought in and give you the ability to draw more air (forced induction when you get it) a stock intake can still draw in alot of air. on a stock engine a CAI isnt gonna give you so much airflow that you need a bigger exhaust. personally i would check all of the sensor fittings and make sure that a sensor plug wasent sealed.

when it does kick in, does it kick in with full power??

plug wire in the wrong spot...

I've double and triple checked all the plug wires (it isn't missing all the time, just on load with a surge too), all the gaskets and seals seem to be in place. One thing that does bother me is the seal in the extra hole that existed in the top tube on the cold air kit. There was nothing in the instructions about what to do with that - so I plugged it with what seemed like the right piece.

I have to say it... the instructions with that cold air kit just sucked. So, I really have marginal confidence that this is installed perfectly correct.

I may just take it to Ford and just drop the dime to get them to tune it. I am getting an occasional code from something, but it has not dropped anything on me in the last couple of days.

Ford wont tune your car. Ford Motor Company Strictly Prohibits any ford dealership From modifying Ford PCM's. You will have to take it to a performance shop for a tune. and also make sure that Hole is plugged thats the spot for the IAT some cars don't have it. On the air box any more. Ur probably getting un maff'd air through that hole.

this may sound really dumb, but make sure the filter/maf is still connected to your pipe. I had a similar problem after my vortech was installed. One day I started driving and the thing kept surging and I would stomp the gas and maybe a sec or 2 later it would catch up. So I pull over and turns out the filter with the maf connected to it had separated itself from the rest of the pipe down in the fender, and it was just hanging there by the plug going into the maf. So the engine wasnt breathing good. Stuck it back on there and tightened the hose clamp and it was good to go.

well that fender installation is a pain - took me a couple of hours to get it up there and on the pipe since it goes in through the bottom of the fender and not through the hole on top. It is a completely blind installation of that thing - so good point. I'll check it on that side again to make sure I am getting a good seal everywhere.

What about the aftermarket throttle body? Im just thinking out loud... does that let more air through????
it does but doesnt allow significantly more. not so much that it would be a problem. hell, check the gasket on the tb.
It doesn't anymore air if ur not ported... is like having a 4 ft door with a 4 ft ceiling.. then u change the door to a 7 ft one but dont adjust the ceiling... it would be the same as having the 4ft door cause the ceiling is restricting....

besides that check all connection maybe u got a sensor mixed. Vacuum leak or w/e.... after that get a port and polish to really see performance gains

the air/fuel will be thrown off...regardless of the intake being ported/polished...your taking in more then usual air...even from just a CAI alone....so it will run better when the car is tuned for the correct settings over the stockers.....this has nothing to do with the MAF sensor...you dont make enough power and take in enough air to worry about that

Ah HA! I found it.

After putting on the Headers and the exhaust I found that one of the spark plugs had cracked. It appears that those NGK iridium plugs are extremely fragile.

Some casual conversation at the Auto Parts shop was quite enlightening. The counter nerd said that they have a very high return rate on those because they are so delicate. It seems that they have a high breakage rate from the factory and just any bump at all will cause them to fracture. They are MUCH more fragile than a standard platinum plug. His comment is that they probably have one in every 5 sets that is broken by the time it gets to the customer.

I had completely missed this because it would run fine with the lead tester and every plug was firing and all the wires checked perfect. Same case with the Mass Air and the oxy sensor on the exhaust. All tested great on the stand. BUT... on the road under load it would just start missing and backfiring like a demon. I decided to just start from ground zero and pulled out all the plugs and #6 just fell apart in my hand when I took it out.

Hope this helps someone down the road (so to speak).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments. I hope this solves the problem. I'm off to take it for a long ride in the hills just to make sure.
