Hi guys, new '03 Cobra motor is in!! Not running yet however :-(

BUT - I need to locate the engine number - where is it located on a 2003 Mustang Cobra block??

On my 2001 car, it's unmistakeable - it's stamped in HUGE letters & numbers on a pad cast into the block just forward and above the clutch cable entry point into the bell housing. However, the 03 Cobra doesn't have the same info, the same stamping or anything - where were they stamped (if anywhere) on the block?

This is the best shot I can get of the only likely suspect, but this is TINY and drilled rather than stamped above the starter and doesn't follow the same format.... Anyone got a better idea?

Why do you need the number on it?

I honestly don't recally seeing any engine number on mine, and I inspected it pretty thoroughly before I installed it. I could be wrong though. I just verified mine by the fact when I pulled the oil pan and shined a flashlight in there, I could see the "Manley/SVT" stamping on the rods.

If you need help getting it running let me know.

hi, thanks for the offer of assistance - it's likely that I'll need your help!!

So, the engine number issue is unique to Australia - all cars here MUST have an engine number and it MUST be stamped onto the engine. If your car doesn't have one, the licensing authority will issue one and your motor needs to be stamped with it....

So, I'll dig up the details on the original VIN for the car that the motor came from and stamp the 3F123456 part of the VIN onto the block just in front and above where the clutch cable enters the bell housing...

Ford Australia imported 300 of the 2001/2002 Cobra into Australia (yes, they made a few in 2002 (mine for example) and I purchased it brand new in December 2003 (they weren't great sellers after the first 50-100 of them, as they were priced very highly ($80K for a Cobra, $85K for a convertible) when the exchange rate was about 60cAUD/$1US and a similar spec 4 door (locally built) car was about half that price - but about 1/4 as cool!

They never imported the 2003 Cobra into Australia, I purchased this drivetrain from the US so I think I have the original VIN floating around on a document so I'll chase that up and use the last 8 digits of the VIN to mark the motor....

That makes sense then.

At work, we only dataplate engines for the region they're going to. For example engines going to North America get EPA dataplates. If they're going to Europe, they get Euro dataplates, China gets Chinese dataplates, and other regions get the applicable dataplate. If you import a North American engine to Europe, it's not going to have a Euro dataplate, and vice versa.

You'll just have to work with local regulation regarding imported motors I suppose.

It really does seem like a ridiculous regulation though. Engines are regularly changed out or upgraded, so I don't see why they need to be serialized.

Will do, I'm pretty sure that it's the same as a 2001 Cobra, just made during the 2002 model year specifically for Australia - i.e. the power seat setup was the passenger side, it came delivered with Australian-manufactured brakes (PBR from memory), export seat belts. They made 150 coupes and 150 convertibles...

I'll get a pic of the door tag...

ok, here you go - here's the pic of the door frame sticker - if I'm reading the date correctly then it's a Jan 2002 car? Made I believe to the 01 spec, but made in 2002....

Yeah, I thought I detected a little scepticism in some of the earlier posts...
Anyway, came back from the tuner with 419rwhp so happy about that, although could do without the vibration & harshness, but yet to sit in another one to compare...
