i just bought my first mustang an 89 lx 5.0 5 speed. on a cold start the idle surges pretty bad. it wil stay at about 1000 rpm then drop down till it amost stalls then jump up above 1000 and settle for a while. if you hit the throttle the engine almost dies then after a second or two revs up. i thought it might be a vacuum leak or a dirty MAF sensor. i couldnt find a vacuum leak, then found another problem, im either blind or there is no MAF sensor. im not too sure that to make of this.

you are correct with your assumption on the MAF. 88 cali's, then 89 and newer.

i have an 88 without MAF, and i also have the same BBK intake. the MAF should be between the 2 pieces of pipe. for cars without MAF, BBK supplies an adapter peice to fit in its place.

well i guess that would explain why the engine runs like it does being SD, i have cai, a 65mm tb, trickflow intake manifold, headers and an x-pipe. the computer probably thinks the engine is getting the same airflow as the stock engine right? im guessing since its a SD engine the computer would have also been replaced with an older one, ill check today. wheres a good place to look for a maf eec?
