Hey guys, my alternator **** the bed last week and I was going to replace it with a pa unit from american muscle. So I was looking at the wire upgrade that they want you to buy with it, Do I need that? if so why?. The only thing on my car that is a draw on the system is a water pump for the s/c and a bap. Thank you kindly for your replies;)

Do you need it? Probably not. I would get it though. The PA alt. is a step or two up in amperage over the stock one, isn't it? Better to have the heavier guage wire on there then.

Resurrecting this thread... I only have 30k on my stang and i have already killed 1 alternator and in the process of killing the next one... So my question is what is a good performance alternator... Things leading to early death i can only assume my after market deck, amps, gauges, and leds.... any suggestions on what alternator to get is the pa one for american muscle any good i want to replace it this last time and forget about it! I drive 2 hours away from my house about 3 times a month and am just waiting for this stupid one to give out on me again last time at least i was right by my house this time i may not be so lucky!

More than likely it's not your accessories killing your alternators unless something is really wired up crazy.. There is a TSB for the alternators going bad ... Ford decided to spec a new alternator and not make it replace the previous part number. So, if you go to the dealer to buy an alternator, you do not get the updated alternator. They will pull up your vehicle info and order it by what came on your car through the parts catalog. So, this is simple why people are still getting bad alternators more than once. Anyways, there are really only two real options. OEM or the PA Performance as mentioned in this very thread.

Here is the part number for the OEM alternator... 7R3Z-10346-B

Thanks nasty... now would you say that pa performance is better than the updated oem? and how long would you say i have in this alternator i got it tested and its "rippling" they said the diode is probably going out? also last question any tips on changing out the alternator... never done it myself but this time i will be so far i have been able to pull off every mod by myself.... not all without some troubles but in the end i have been able to pull it off (with everyones help on here of course)

The diode is exactly what goes out in them so you've probably got one of the 'old' alternators. The PA Performance is going to be better than the OEM. In the end I would probably get whichever is the cheapest. I don't think your mods require the need for the PA Performance. However, it's your call if it's only a few bucks more. I'm not really sure what the OEM alternators are going for now.

I don't think the new alternator is available anymore. I am on my 4th or 5th one right now and everytime I ask for the new part # they tell me that has been discontinued and the only ones available are rebuilds. I would go PA if I were you. That is what I am going to do for the next one.
