how do I drop the k-member without springs killing me?

Hi, I have the engine/trans out of my '90 while I repair the drivers side struttower frame rail area. I have the jack stands under the a-arms on the inside end where there bolted to the k-member. I already have the 2 drivers side k-member bolts out, and the strut out as well. I have the damaged metal cut out, and por-15'ed inside the framerail where the k-member bolts go. This weekend I will install the crush tube plate and then cut and weld new metal were I cut off on the strut tower ect... after I get this all done, I wanted to drop the k-member down a little so I can clean and paint under the frame rail where it sits on the k-member and also clean/paint that area of the k-member.

So if I remove all the rest of the k-member bolts and remove the strut on the other side also, can I leave the jack stands where they are and then put a jack on each side of the car under the framerail before the fire wall and jack the car up higher to seperate/give me some space between the framerail and k-member? or will the springs come flying out?

I only need a couple inches of room to sandblast and paint... then I can drop it and bolt it back up, and then move on to clean up/painting rest of engine bay so I can put motor back in before winter comes...

I hope this makes sense the way I said it... lol

The springs really aren't under that much pressure. I was able to gently ease mine out when I replaced my K with a tubular one. Just disconnect the spindle or strut, keep a jack under the A-arm, and let it down very slowly. You can gradually drop the A-arm to the point the spring is no longer compressed and just pluck it out.

Of course if you're really safety conscious then spring compressors will solve your problem. Throw a set on and you can do as you please without too much worry.

I second the fact that they aren't under that much pressure. When I did mine I left the wheels on, unbolted the k member, lowered it down and just rolled the whole thing out without touching the springs.

cool thanks... like I said I have the front of car held up with jack stands on the controls arms near were they bolt to the k-member (the rear of car the stand are on axle tubes), I just need to seperate the frame from the k-member a little to clean/paint, so I figure I can just put jacks on the framrail in the middle/firewall area and lift the car up more... at least that's my hope... only need a couple inches to get to where the framerail rests on the k-member (where the 2 longs bolts go).
