I told myself I'm going to sell the car if I had one more alternator go on it. Should I? I can't afford this **** anymore. It wasn't even at high rpm or anything.

What causes them to go? Id try to find one with a really good warranty and go from there

4 of the alternators were replaced under warranty.. I'm thinking it's the heat that's killing them because I never have problems in the winter.. That metal coolant crossover is almost touching the alternator and the vortech is right next to it.. My coolant was up to 210 degrees today and it felt hellishly hot when I openend the hood

Shitty ground somewhere?
I already checked all the grounds and replaced the engine to chassis ground with 4 gauge wire.. I just can't figure it out for the life of me

Sounds like your car is more then a mess then my fuel problem right now :(

where are you getting these alt's from? i went through 3 in one year from carquest! So i finally went to the shop down the road from me and he said they were made shitty something to do with the stator plate i think its supposed to be welded with a bead all the way around, and anymore they just tack weld them. A lot of them are made cheap and refurbished, and when they get hot they crack and don't charge, i had him order me a new one made in USA and it's been fine for 1.5 years now, dammit i wished you lived here so i could take you to john and get your **** tested:(

Actually it's not so easy with the supercharger.. I have to grind off the face of the alternator to get it to fit and they always give me crap about it when I try to return it for warranty replacement

2 of them were high output alternators, 3 were from autozone and 3 from Ford

damn hardhitter. I hate hearing that bro. There is some bad wiring somewhere! If i were you i would find someone with the same car and be sure of EVERYTHING. Match up all the wires and so forth to be sure they are all the same i guess. :dunno

Bout to PM you...
If it's bad wiring then why doesn't it immediately fry the alternator? It always takes it at least like a week before it dies. Which wires are you talking about? There's only one wire going to alternator and it's connected directly to the battery. Then there is the plug with 2 wires going to it.

are you getting shitty advanced auto alternators? if so then that's why. i went through like 4-5 of them within a few years on my fox.

but maybe you have something grounded that shouldnt be. As in just a random hot wire that might be touching a ground somewhere or whatever. No telling. Check hot wires too. If you've done alot of audio stuff, maybe go over those goods again.

#19 ·
I always take my time doing wiring and I've installed a lot of audio systems before. I've checked all the wiring I've done and I can't see anything out of place. I can't really check EVERY wire on the entire car. I have no idea what all the voltages are supposed to be.

#20 ·
thats what im saying... get another car exactly like yours and just compare. Something is up man.

#25 ·
is this after you installed the larger pulley hardhitter?

U need to buffer the load on the ALT somehow!!

#26 ·
Yes after I installed the larger pulley on a new Motorcraft alternator it was working great! I could go wide open and the voltage was barely dropping. And now a couple of weeks later I'm just driving around normally and the voltage drops down to 12V at idle. So it's not completely dead and it allowed me to drive home but it's definitely not right.

I rechecked my datalogs I was taking when it happened and the alternator was working perfectly when I drove for about 20 minutes somewhere. The voltage was constant the whole way there. Then I let the car sit for about 20 minutes. Came back and started it up and that's when the alternator died. It dropped about 1.5 volts from when I turned it off 20 minutes earlier.

Maybe your amp or something is staying on when you turn the car off (maybe a light or something) drains the battery, and then alternator fights for its life to save your battery!

im still keeping the system on my mind. I just know it doesnt take much from them to ruin alts. Been there and went through many. And at that time i was only running a 600 watt amp. So it didnt take much.

#33 ·
hes not running a capacitor thats what I was thinking about 3 alternators ago haha

#35 ·
Well, an improperly grounded system can certainly cause issues, although I'm not saying it would cause you car to **** out alternators faster than a college student shits out tacos after a tequila bender.

And of course as you know a cap can help.... but 1000 watts is not earth shattering... not enough to make your car slay more alternators than Freddy Kruger at a slumber party.

But at this point, it's worth trying everything you can. Not sure if I've missed this in the thread, but how are underhood heat levels?
