Methanol, why don't I hear about everyone using it?

And do I have to be f/I for it to really be worth it? It seems like a pretty cool idea imo. I just watched a YouTube video over it so I get the general idea of it. All I really know is methanol is **** into your engine and evaporated because if the heat, which cools it and makes the gaskets (I think that's what there called?) run more efficiently

No you do not need forced induction for methanol injection. Actually methanol is more combustible than gas and has a higher octane rating like ethanol. Methanol has no lubricating properties which is harsh on cylinder walls, gaskets, etc. But the methanol/water injection isn't a bad idea, I'm not sure I would use it on a DD without the proper tuning. Methanol will make up about 25% of your fuel charge allowing you to run more timing = more power (to an extent while still running gasoline).

Reference/credibility: Former kart racer, built my own engines because I had the tools/machines and learned a lot, especially on a dyno. Engines were ran on methanol only as per WKA (World Karting Association) rules.

Thanks for the great reply! I probly won't consider it then since I'll need a tune, and I don't want to get a dyno right now considering I'm not even close to finishing my car lol I'm guessing bama wouldn't be able to tune for methanol?

To me water meth has a fairly specific application, I think most people here don't run it because the money could be better spent on other stuff that could get you the improvments you see at our power levels since most of us don't have built motors. The only reason I would run and have contemplated running it is because I had very high IAT at idle, but then I realized once I get into the boost you have more air moving over the intercooler and it cools the charge to a point. I can see if your running a race car, drag car, maybe an autocross car where your not moving fast but are pushing the car. Most cars that are running water meth are doing so because they are running big boost and that creates a lot of heat and can allow them to run pump gas under boost. I think I would run it if I saw enough people running it on twin screws because from what ive heard its possible it could ruin your rotors. Most cars I see in magazines running it are using it on turbo builds.

Basically if you have a motor that you need to run racing gas in, ie. high boost or really high compression, you can run pump gas and meth instead. If you don't need the higher octane you're not going to see much from it.

I had a nice setup and used it daily in my evolution, if you do go that route the best brand is aquamist hands down, I used it for a couple years without a hiccup. I was running a HTA GT35r running 36 psi with on 91 octane and meth, no issues ever but I know quite of few others with lesser kits and melted pistons or nice windows in their block from the kit failing under boost.

Over the winter I'll be adding meth to my daily driver. Reason being 20 lbs of boost heat soaks real fast in the summer when it's 100 degrees outside. The methanol will help fight that.

I also won't be tuning mine for it. The way I look at it is if you tune for meth then you can push it further but if it fails your screwed. If you don't tune for it then its just an extra safety net because even if it fails you'll still be okay

Well that's brilliant. Let me know how that works for you.

Why would you want to run that boost and then lose 60 hp because your car is stumbling, spitting and smoking, fouling plugs every other week? That's brilliant thinking there.

Water injection would be better for him if he doesn't want to tune for it.

Almost anyone in the b5 s4 world who wanted to make power used water/meth injection. On the b5's it was nice because a lot if people used their washer fluid reservoir as their meth reservoir. When the fluid got low, it would light up on the dash to add fluid to the reservoir, on top of the other fail safes.

Any type of boosted application that would like lower iat's would benefit. Don't see it on n/a too often but I'm sure it would help.

WTF ARE b5 s4's....

I ran 100% meth injected post blower and pre inter cooler..My KB has ports you can drill out and tap that put it in the right place... I only used it when I was running my race tune and 116 oct race fuel... I don't use it for my cars (brag)HP but we dynoed it with meth and 116 at 18lbs it made over 600 WHP but there was no way I was going to push it that hard in the real world... we settled on a safe tune that made 550
I also had it malfunction and blew a head gasket.. melted the head a little.. removed it for the next build and just upped the pumps.. I would look into setting your car up to run E85 before I would try injection... you will get the benefit of the meth thru your existing fuel system...

I'm actually piecing together a meth kit that I'll be adding to my N/A stang. It will be hooked up this winter. Reason I'm doing this is cuz I have some of the parts already and I'll be adding nitrous soon, maybe next summer/fall. Nitrous and Meth work very well together. I plan to go FI in the future too so why not do it now? I'll keep everybody updated as to how well it works on an N/A engine.

I know a few people that have run meth. The common problems are the meth corroding intake piping, and mix getting past the check valve when the system is not in use.

I have never actually tried it myself though.

fun fact: you can tune you motor to take washer fluid instead of meth to save money and increase availability. just don't use washer fluid with glycol (I think that is the chemical, look it up).

Yea I've been looking into it. It needs to be blue and -20 degree with a 30% methanol 70% water mix. Then you just add heet to make it to 50/50 mix. That's pretty cheap

I used my washer reservoir and it was too small. Having no squirtty stuff was not good either.. so if you do want to put it on your car, relocate the battery to the trunk and get a 2 Gal res so you don't have to fill it up so much.. and be damn sure to have a low level indicator in the mix.. if you run it hard and it runs low on the meth bad things will happen
