Replacing Smart Junction Box. Few questions?

Hey guys,
I'm going to replace my SJB soon as mine is toast. Just a few questions.
1. I read somewhere that someone's SJB got intruded with water, and it just required a reprogram, not a replacement. Could this be true, and possibly apply to mine also?

2. Will it be drive able to dealer to get reprogrammed after install?

3. Being that there are so many ways for these cars to leak, can I protect my new SJB by maybe putting a large bag over it before install so water can no longer intrude into it? I have a leak that I I think I just fixed, but I am unsure and know that it will eventually leak again.

Thanks!

1-maybe but I doubt it
2-it probably won't start. If it does you should make it to the dealership
3-dielectric grease is probably the best way to protect it. Keeping the drain plug clear or removing the little rubber grommet completely.

As 07 Boss says...and I'll concur because I've had the same issue:

No, it's not a reprogram. The moisture gets in the SJB and corrodes. It's a replacement.

I can tell you that when you get the part you need to take it to the dealer and have it programmed before putting it into the car.

Seal the grommet. There was a TSB for that a long time ago and Ford can give you the details and probably even supply you with what you need.

Can I buy a used sjb and have it reprogrammed as long as there was no water intrusion?

I researched and found out a used one can be reprogrammed, but are the smart junction boxes all the same throughout the years and models? Like would a 2005 v6 smart junction box work in my 2006 mustang gt if reprogrammed?

That I don't know. Look up parts for the different cars and see if the same pn comes up. I would think so though just because the stuff the SJB runs is going to be pretty much the same with all the different models.

I'm gonna pull mine out tonight or tomorrow night. I am going to try and clean it off and see if that helps at all. I have read of one person who cleaned their corroded by water terminals off and it helped and solved their problems.

I looked up a pin diagram and all of my problems come from 1 plug that goes into like 70 pins

I cleaned it out to no avail. The box seems like it comes apart but I didn't try that. I got a used one from ebay, but it has signs of corrosion from water damage also, so I haven't replaced it yet. I will update as I do, but I am unsure of when I will because the damage isn't unbearable yet and I am short on money
