Rust on Rotors

Be forewarned:

I recently upgraded my front brakes to Bullitt calipers, Stainless Steel Hoses, and DBA 5000 series two piece rotors, and am experiencing rust on the UNSWEPT area of the rotor, where the disc attaches to the hat, quite unsightly. Anyway, spoke with a rep from DBA, and while certainly wanting to seem concerned, basically told me there is nothing that can be done (other than routinely clean them with brake cleaner or such).

So, although the rotors feel and look great, (in between cleanings), I would not have gone with DBA if I had known about this rust issue.

Since I am about to upgrade the rears to Cobra specs, any comments on your experience with different brands of rotors would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Zinc plated rotors also rust. Brembo rotors that come in the cobra brake package rust. I would think that in Texas this shouldnt be an issue but if you drive when its raining or wet out there is potential for rust. Have you noticed yellow spots on your rotors after it rains? That is rust that gets taken off by the brake pad once brakes are applied. Any rotor is prone to rusting eventually.

It was not driven in the rain, merely caught out in the driveway during a downpour. It probably would be much worse if I had actually been driving in the rain. Car is not a daily driver though...

The part that gets taken off by the brake pad is not what I am referring to, it is the large area, on a two-piece rotor, where the rotor is attached to the hat. The actual area that is swept by the pad is relatively small in comparison to the area that is left with rust. My whole rationale for going with two-piece, cross-drilled and slotted rotors was for the visual appeal, not so much the performance.

I know which area you are talking about. Hard to believe that after 1 rain fall they are rusting. I had the Brembos on my car for 6 years and there is no rust on the outside of the rotor. Only on the inside. Brakemotive eBay zinc plated ones I've had for a year and they are starting to show a little rust on the hub. However my car is a daily driver that is driven in snow and salt in the winter. Something isn't right with your rotors.

I agree Zinc plated rotors also rust, I know because I have a set. I would just clean them up, but its pretty normal to have rust where the pads do not come into contact with.

So your the guy at the car cruise with a pristine car all cleaned up until you get to the wheels and rotors lol. Good to meet you. I'm the guy standing there smh :D

Paint them with black high temp grille paint. Get it at any hardware store/ home depot etc. I used it on mine. Works great, dries satin black, and hasnt rusted yet. Plus its a thin paint. Not very thick and is heat resistant. Dont tape off the area where the pad contacts them. Just paint up to it with the brush. The pad will clean off and extra if you get any on there.

For the rear wheels I bought rotors from Autozone. They are not zinc plated and rusted extremely fast. I finally bought a set of zinc plated slotted and drilled rotors. While zinc plated will rust, they hold up a lot better than those without zinc plating.

I have Baer Eradispeed two-piece rotors on all four corners with no real rust issues. She's not a dd but she's been caught in the rain several times. The Baer rotors have very little surface area that isn't swept by the pads so they stay looking great.

Baer's have a larger hat than the DBA's so you are entirely correct, the unswept area is much smaller.

What size are your rims, 18"s? The rotor seems to fill the entire area on my stock bullitt rims, so much so that I cannot fit my fingers between the edge of the rotor and the rim.

I am going with the Baer's for the rear, they too are pricey...about $450 for the pair.

"Quite frankly I have no idea why people would care about a little rust on the edge and the hat of a rotor "

Then, obviously, this thread was not intended for you.
