so i am starting to think about long term goals for the stang. i currently have a fake saleen aka the "faleen" given by the great Cheeks McDuke with a 3.8 v6 windstar motor. i have the opportunity to buy a 4.6 gt motor with wiring for dirt cheap. motor has 90,000 miles on it. i really need your help mustang brothers with this direction in my future. I am a high school shop teacher with a limited budget but im thinking if i buy the motor and sit it on a stand for a year while i put it together with cams, heads, p/p intake, upgraded fuel system then i can drop it in around a year. this car is my daily driver but i got the mod bug REALLY BAD!!

ok here is my question....

buy 4.6 and build it
or
v6 m112 setup

im thinking they will cost the same, maybe im wrong. let me know what you guys think

just some fun photos.....

pretty sure that first pic is a 5.4, anyways

really depends what you want you can make power with both

for a v8 swap your going to want a whole donor car or your going to nickle and dime yourself to death with all the little things that wont come with just the motor

or you can got all out with the v6, built 4.3 with a turbo

and depending on how much you plan on putting out your going to need to beef up the rear end, and trans either way you go

Also pretty sure that is an Eaton and not a twin screw.

And if he didn't know that I doubt any swap is going to ever happen!

Fyi: You can't hate on someone unless they actually "have" something for you to hate on. My car is built, your working on your car... can't be a hater in this case!

I think that people are just skeptical because typically the people who perform successful swaps, don't ask about it on here. They have the knowledge and know-how to just do it. They also have done enough research (also having the skillset) to know what they want.

Doing a swap and throwing on a FI are two totally different projects when it comes to duration, cost, longevity, end goals. All of the aspects of the project are totally different. If you're simply upgrading because you want to have more power in your vehicle, you haven't considered the other parts of the project which are integral to its success.

If I was considering doing a swap I wouldn't be looking to poll the general public on what's a better idea. I don't think anyone on here is singling you out to criticize you. Just know that there are people on here who have a LOT of experience with this and have seen a lot of people fail at this.

As a teacher, I'm sure you can agree with me... it's easier to find the right answer through studying and education than polling the rest of the class...

v8 swap: Major pain in the ass, V8 sound and power
V6 build: Powerfull V6, no where near as nice of a sound, "different".
Buy V8: V8 done right, build it from there.

As said before, either way you'll need a better tranny and rear end and suspension to be worthwhile. So you might as well start w/ an 8.8 and build rather then buy an 8.8 then build.

Now if you go to a carbed set up, then I wouldn't think it would be as hard but idk ?

^eh, i didnt think it was that hard to do. But i did do a lot of research to really get to know how these cars work and the true differences between v6 and gts. I got a hell of a deal on a parts car and it was worth every hour and penny i put into it. Only took 3 weekends by myself to do the swap. But i had the tools and motivation to do it. If you do decide to do the swap then take your time and find a nice complete parts car. If i were you and just wanting more power then build your 6er and put some sort of FI on it. Cant hate on a v6 thats faster than most gts around

Yeah if your ears dont work :p

Ive won evertime I line up at the track w/ my friend in his GT. But to hell with the sound difference ...

But if you've done a 302 swap. Give us some detail. Really is no write up or sure enough detail that is "easily" found. You should enlighten the V6 community with some pretty good detail on the swap and we might see it happen more often.

Id be much more inclined to have done it had I found more info to research on it. Was my original idea anyways ...

I must admit I'm a fan of the PD-blown 4.6 DOHC...

However I would personally advise against the V8 swap.

It's not a straight engine swap. As said before, you'll need a donor car. There is LOTS to change. My swap only really changed my heads and intake, with a few lines. It's still got a Romeo block 4.6 in it, still GT ECM, most of the GT fuel system (except for the Cobra tank and dual GT pumps :potstir). And I ran into all sorts of problems with that. It's not easy or quick. Building a V6 would be considerably easier.

Why is all that above important? Because you said your car is a DD. If I was modifying my DD, I wouldn't want to completely gut and change the car. I'd want to modify what's already there. Maybe go turbo? That's plenty of power and pretty cost effective.

But it's up to you. I fully understand the desire to completely modify a car you're attached to. Look what I did. However I do caution you that mine was a toy on the side, and was easier than your plan.

im getting a feel for were i am heading. the appeal to get the motor and strip it/ build it from the ground up is in my idea... tempting because 1) i can get the motor, tranny, wiring harness, computer, and miscellaneous parts for $1000. my daily driver will soon be a weekend worrier in June when i pick up my truck from a family member. 2) i really have the ambition to learn, make mistakes, get mad, and eventually be a better mechanic because of the build.

cons: the extra parts will nickle and dime me up the ass and its a huge frustration with out the full donor car.

v6 build: its already complete all i have to do is add to it. easier and the WOW factor of a 6er thats super fast.

cons: limited horse power.... around 400 unless i drop serious money like 10,000 and get the twin turbo with forged internals, tuned, 8.8 rear end, major work to get there.

so over all, if i buy the v8 and sit it on a stand, strip it, bore it, port and polish it, make it my engine over the time frame of a year or 18 months it will probably teach me a lot but end up spending way too much money.

i know im not knowledgeable like most of you on this topic but i want to be. that is why i started this thread. i want to learn! when some newbie comes in and asks me the ratio gearing of the dooma-fluxcapacitor-thingy i want to be able to help him as you guys are helping me. thats not why i wont to do this build but it is a contributing factor. thanks for the input guys, keep the ideas coming.
