I would grab a 04 GT...

 

I Believe that the engine from 99-04 is generally the same there was a minor change in between the 99-00 models and the 01 and up models but other than that i don't believe that there is a difference. unless of course you are looking for a specific mode l like cobra gt v6 or something like that. another thing i just thought of was the fact that an 04 will most likely have less miles on it than a 99

 

01+up hood scoop, larger side scoops, better transmission, engine, instead of having the cd player and tape separate, the 01 has only one being a 2 din. bullit wheels, smoked headlights and that's all I remember.

edit: the 99 instead of the gt badges on the sides it says 35 anniversary around a pony, and on the 04 it says 40 anniversary, on the bottom of the dash theres also 3 buttons, traction control, fog lights, and don't remember the last one if its the rear window defroster.

Imo go for a 01 if you can.

 

The only big change I'm aware of was going from the T45 tranny to the 3650. I *think* that was in '01. From what I understand, T45s have slightly stronger gears, but 3650s have much better synchros and internal shift stops, making them a better overall tranny.

 

I think the T-45 gets a lot of bad wraps, the deal with the syncros and shift stops is nothing a quality installed short throw shifter can't solve. I have to give my T-45 props for all the HP torque and 3000 RPM launches the little guy has held up well.

 

yeah go 01 GT and up if you have the choice they look better exterior with the beefy side scoops and hood scoop, better tranny has 11 inch clutch rather than 10 inch clutch i believe, and the double din radio is a plus

 

Ok so basically the difference was in the 99-00 years and the 01-04 is the same ?

i heard the sychros on the 3650 go out and but shift forks are weak on the t45.

 

99-00 were Windsor with press on cam gears 8 bolt cranks and 10.5in clutches, and 01-04 were romeo with bolt on cam gears 6 bolt cranks with 11in clutches,

 

the water pump pulleys were different too

 

also the rear defrost bottom and radio

 

better cup holder design

 

My favorite is the 99 limited edition(duh,lol) it has the spoiler,scoopes of the 01+ but it has the best looking,two tone, interior of all 99-04 gt's imo

03-04's have 21lb injectors and the IAT built into the MAF instead of seperate.

 

My 2nd gear syncros in my 3650 are getting weak. The car only has 60K miles on it and it's not really been driven hard.

 

correct me if I am wrong but I believe 99 and maybe 00 had a larger TB

Go with a 02-04 GT the 99-01 Had a tad bit weaker motor I forget what they are called I think theres a romeo and a juliet motor lol funny I know but the 02-04's had a tad more hp and tq and a few stronger parts.

03 04 is what i would get. I have a 2000. its fast though :dunno

 

There was a lot of little changes from 99 to 04. I remember a thread on here discussing this topic not to long ago. I also can not find it now, but I do remember reading it.

Lol at the weaker comment. One thing to note is the 99s have 3 bolt tensioners. I agree that the cup holders are designed horribly in the 99/00s

 

I purchased a 99 about a month ago. 90k miles in GREAT condition for 4500. Car is cleaner than most 04s Ive looked at. I hate traction control and it doesnt come with it so no loss there. The only thing I dont like as much as the newer ones is no hood scoop and the cup holders are HORRIBLE. I just installed an MGW short shifter though and now the cup holders work great since the shifter no longer hits the drink and it shifts awesome.

For how little the changes are I think it basically what you can get in the right price range in the right condition. I love my 99 so far.

Yeah the 99-01's were fake v8's. They appeared to be v8's but were secretly running on only 4 cylinders. Driver side cylinders were fake. At least "thats what i heard".
