Well I didn't get as far as I had hoped. The engine is out (and dumped a whole bunch of coolant in the process) and the balancer is on the new motor. I would have gotten further, but I stumbled across a couple of problems, such as the fact the starter was only hanging on by 1 ****ing bolt! I picked up some new ones on the way home. I still need to uncouple the steering shaft and put the headers on, but then I can put this baby back in.

It also didn't help that is was pouring today, and the wind was blowing all the rain into the garage. I am freakin' soaked. Better luck tomorrow I suppose.

Close But No Cigar

Put the headers on yesterday. Had to end up heli-coiling 5 bolt holes. 2 of the bolts on the drive side are so tough to access you can't even put the locking tabs on them. Passenger side was much easier.

Unfortunately getting the engine in hasn't been a walk in the park. Ended up putting some scuffs/scratches on my headers from the K-frame, chipped some paint on the valve covers, and a little dent on the oil pan. Good thing it's not a show car, right?

I also found out another unfortunate thing- I can't install it with the hoist attached to the back of the heads. There's so little clearance between the back of the head and the firewall that the L-shaped brackets and bolts contact the firewall before the mounts line up. As is, it's sitting on the K-member, about 2" foreward from where it needs to be.
Proof it's at least in chassis-

(As well as the fact I'm working on a black engine in a black car with no light. :shiftyeyes)

So now I'll need to snag some bolts that will fit in the intake runner part of the heads, and lift from there.

And a question to those that install with headers-
How do you usually thread the steering shaft through the header primaries?

most long tube headers if they are like that you have to pull the steering wheel/shaft out, then re-install it through the headers once they are in.

Dunno if there is some special trick on new edge/4.6l cars.

I'm subscribing to your thread, so my grandchildren can come to my graveside in 90 years to tell me how your car looked after the build gets done.

I should get myself a storage unit to hide an engine in..... :shiftyeyes

Looks like it's coming along nicely. Good work man.
